Presentation Oct 17th - Culture is Medicine: "Weaving Suicide Prevention into our Work with Native Youth.”

Dr. Doreen Bird (Kewa Pueblo) has been working in the field of suicide prevention for over 20 years. She has worked in research with tribes of the Southwest as well as a portfolio of over 15 native nations working on suicide prevention programs with the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. Dr. Bird has worked with the IHS Native American Suicide Prevention Task Force and mentors Native youth in higher education. She is a mother of 6 children and 4 grandchildren and they all love to participate in their cultural ceremonies.

In our discussion, we will explore the protective factors that contribute to the well-being of Native Americans.

During the presentation, we will emphasize the importance of integrating culture in improving an individual's well-being and quality of life, supported by both evidence-based and practice-based research. We will also provide tools and resources to help mental health professionals enhance their cultural awareness and promote a sense of pride in Native culture among youth and families.

Come and join us here!
